About the Drum Circle

Drum Circle at UBC LongHouse

A drum circle is a rhythm-based event where people gather in a circle to express themselves with African drums and percussion instruments. A facilitator guides the session, encouraging and supporting people as they reconnect with their innate sense of rhythm. Inclusiveness is a core principle – people of all backgrounds, mobility, ages and skill levels (even first-time beginners) can participate. The circle has potential to teach us about community, intergenerational learning, creativity, team building, spirituality, mentoring, wellness and respect for other cultures. It becomes a model for our world family, an opportunity to engage in this age-old activity where young and old play and celebrate together.

Lyle Povah

Lyle facilitates African drumming and music events
locally and globally, offering programs in hospital, conference, child and adult health, corporate, corrections and community settings.

He is a singer, percussionist, guitarist, researcher, writer, teacher, and recording artist. Lyle uses drumming and music to foster health, creativity, leadership, and community-building.

The intention of the Drum Circle Program is to provide a healthy environment where individuals within a group context can celebrate and express the full range of the human experience, and in the process connect with their own creativity, passion and ultimately personal healing. MusicWorks’ philosophy is one of inclusiveness, inviting people of all ages and backgrounds on a personal exploration through rhythm.

Lyle travels throughout North America, Europe and Africa presenting at conferences, leading corporate team building sessions and bringing musical fun, wellness and learning to a wide variety of musical arenas, including health care centres, youth at risk programs, seniors centres, schools, church groups, within Corrections Canada institutions and at community events. Lyle has worked at British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital for over 20 years, conducts ongoing programming and research at St. Paul’s Hospital in the In-Patient Eating Disorders Program, is on the faculty at the Haven Institute for Professional Training, facilitates executive development programs for the University of British Columbia’s Sauder School of Business and leads the longest running weekly drop-in Community Drum Circle in Canada.
